The Avocatus Seagull

I'm 10 minutes late for the PPTA breakfast. Getting motivated to do extra things is increasingly difficult. I don't have spare energy. After a full morning of teaching I get my not favourite Year 10 class for a double in the afternoon. The extra money is a Godsend but this class throws everything they've got at the system. And there's a critical mass who don't give a hoot about their education. Makes me ponder  their home life. Last time I referred two and today those two present a more cautionary approach. They know I'll sin bin them. Today's strategy, I promise they can watch a film for the last 30 minutes. As they're doing a film review this is not out of the ball park. But I earn my money.

At the house John is finishing sanding ready for oiling tomorrow. He knows his mahi. I've marked some gaps to be filled and he's done these. John likes talking but I'm in a hurry to get to GBC by 3. Robyn is waiting. I want advice on where to cut the Avocatus quartzite slab for the kitchen island and the splash back. As it happens there's not much choice. Anthony and his off sider measure up, identifying and avoiding cracks. I emphasise  a preference to keep the seagull as centred within the island as possible... flying above the waves rather than skimming the tops. Its wings, soaring through space. The slab is enormous and dramatic. Natural beauty on a scale we imitate only in art. It will lose its grandeur when  cut. Unavoidable. The seagull's wings clipped.

In the car I call Kirk. When I checked the contract yesterday I calculated an extra $4,700 to pay. After stewing on it I added the progress payments. The total is the extra which means they've been added up wrong. I thought I'd made a mistake when I was adding up sums yet to pay, but my it depends which contract total you look at. Kirk takes it in his stride and says he'll check.
