I realise my winter clothes are in Alexandra and I can't get them. I've got some at Leithfield and I want to look for light fittings from the old house so I get in the car. On the way I pick up some lentils, popping corn, almonds, coconut, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds and crystallised ginger from the Indian supermarket. Random but I regard these as essentials. I get flour from Merivale Fresh Choice.
It's a sunny autumn day. Benign, but there's a heightened sense of expectation. Rising tension, as they call it in the literary world.
The Leithfield attic. As usual I look at the boxes, pick some up but have no clue what's in them. Few are labelled. I regret this now because they all look the same. I do find some winter clothes, have a cuppa with Laurie and Jo, load up and head home. I detour to Waikuku Beach and realise for at least the fifth time this summer that I haven't got my togs. I swim in my undies. No-one has complained yet. I'm sure the water is a few degrees cooler than yesterday, but it's so swimable and blue skies have drawn a crowd. A hundred people, that's a New Zealand crowd anyway. Breaking news later...thousands have flocked to Bondi Beach so the Ozzie government has locked it down.
I try to go to the opening of Anjie's wedding dress exhibition in the Rangiora library but it's been cancelled. Another e-mail I didn't see. Gatherings are restricted to 100 maximum and many smaller ones in public places have been cancelled just in case. People are getting jumpy.
I drop in at No 22 and go over the nail holes I did yesterday in the eaves. It's hard to get it right in one go so I've decided I will tackle nail hole filling as a two step exercise. That way it's done properly.
It only costs my time and as things slow down I've got more of that.
