Art has been a big part of my life, and John's so the Alex/Clyde summer art display in local gardens is a no brainer. The great outside is a wrap around setting for art and music. And it's home grown. I've come to know a few of the artists during my meander expeditions with Lionel. The purpose of these trips was to get Lionel off the couch and out of the house so he could experience life, albeit as a spectator. He used to enjoy watching the world go by from the front seat of the Suzuki. And people stopped to have a chat through the window. My spin off, immersing myself in the local community, so that now I feel I am a local. My childhood in the isolated Te Anau Basin south of here commands respect as Central locals recognise another bona fide Southerner.
So we stroll round Mackie's garden centre. I catch up with ceramics Jenny who Ian the Tiler knows. And Amy who used to teach with me and came home to Alex with her husband and kids after years away. She's making ceramics too. Then there's the old girls spinning and weaving wool. They're experts and don't have to look down at their needles as they knit. It's hot and hotter...summer at last. Lake Dunstan calls.
