Sunday in the Garden

The sun is shining again. I pick up a cast iron door mat I've sourced on Marketplace. About time I furnished the front door. It's the first thing guests put their feet on. I haven't decided shoes on or off but wooden floors survive better with bare feet. It's going to be hard to train people, me especially. My old friend, Karen, another Papanui HS colleague, comes for a look. I desperately want tree planting advice. Karen is a gardener and gave me a voucher for my birthday. When she leaves, though, I'm no further ahead. The buck stops with me. Jo, my former HOD, and old teaching mate, arrives, She lives round the corner and has recently had a chest/ lung operation so is taking it easy. But she did a total fix after the earthquakes so knows the house building score.

When they leave I get the fork and shovel out and start tree moving. My main goal is to create a deciduous border with the good neighbours, the Goodlands. As I don't know how big the trees will grow, it's a challenge. And I always have trouble with how far apart and how close to the fence I should plant them. Pete and Viv arrive. Viv's painting their house. I admire her enthusiasm. I get down to digging and planting. I move the twisted something or rather, it's a while since I bought it and I haven't kept the label, at least twice before I'm happy with the position. Kerry and Jordan, Kahu's mate since he was 5 drop Kahu off. They haven't seen the house but did the drainage for the build. Then Sherry and her mum. I get good advice on the tree. I'm going to have to move it again.

It's been a long day and I've had it by the time we leave. I must be making progress though.
