Tiles, Handles, Sinks, Wallpaper and Mould

Encaustic (cement) tiles are the most traditional type of tile we know and have been used by many cultures over hundreds of years. Early designs were frequently repetitive geometrics that reflected Eastern influences, including carpets and architecture.

I drive to Designastyle for the last tile pick up, the subways. I check on the encaustic tiles which have been misordered...no such word, but Frankie tells me she is trying to source the ones I thought I had bought...from the display board. This may require another wait. Hopefully not another 6 months. I unload the subways at the house and wave at Lance through the window. He doesn't want to be disturbed, focused on getting the enamel paint finished. At Ambrose Heal I interrupt Pete and waste his time checking out handles for the long cupboard doors. I take two away to try on site: black and satin nickel.

Next the kitchen sink. Nicki has found a new sink supplier, Ferrall Burns, and Richard, the manager, is enthusiastic about his selection. There's a variety of interesting finishes and the gunmetal sheds an institutional shadow on stainless. Five years at boarding school and working at institutions over the years has left me feeling a bit over stainless. Gunmetal is an appealing take on this essential home item. Something we use over and over while preparing food, looking into it without seeing it. Speaking of which, when I look for canned tomatoes stored in the fridge I find them furry and unuseable. Last errand on the way home, Next Dore to pick up the indigo chrysanthemum William Morris wall paper. This house is coming together. At last.
