It's a beautiful autumn day. Good for dyi and the garden. There's a cacophony of whining, buzzing and screeching machinery around the neighbourhood as I continue tidying up my much neglected garden. On the way home I pick up ingredients for pickled onions. Friday evening and. although there's no queue outside, there are more people in the supermarket than I've seen since lockdown. Fellow shoppers exchange looks as we weave past each other with awkward stops and starts, sidestepping erratically to maintain safe bacterial transmission distance. A few people are wearing face masks. Their efficacy is debatable as masks quickly become damp and uncomfortable. And apparently you can absorb the virus through your eyes? Personally I'm not a mask fan. Masks are more commonly worn in South East Asia. There's much discussion about their efficacy and America is recommending their use. Donald Trump says he has chosen not to follow that advice. I'm not sure if they'll catch on here. I find them depersonalising and am hoping we'll get through without.
It appears Kahu is coming home... again. AFS USA have got him a ticket flying out of LAX. I have a feeling this time it will line up. Meanwhile the domestic travel ban has been lifted here for stranded foreign tourists so they can make connections home. The wheels turn slowly. I wonder if most would be safer here, but they have to manage day to day without a domicile. Not easy in a lock down.
As for Covid news, global infection passes the milestone of 1000 000. America is leading the way. Here is Aotearoa, the number of new cases has dropped from yesterday's high of 89 to 71, total- 868. The number of people who have contracted Covid in New Zealand has now surpassed those who have caught the infection overseas.
In how to get rid of boredom news, ten year old Maddie wins the RNZ Lego critter competition with her lego sculpture of a tuna, fresh water eel.
