Day 8- Sunshine and Apples

Life in lock down has its up sides. No rush in the morning to get out the door super early to drive across town in the semi-dark. No return commute in afternoon traffic. I haven't worn any makeup, except lipstick once to go to the supermarket, for ten days. More time to read or go for a bike ride. I'm making old dishes like refried beans. There's time to stop and look around. Yesterday I found two laden apple trees. Time to catch up on the garden and tidy the building site. A less cluttered brain so I remember to put the red bin out- I've forgotten the last two collections and it's starting to smell. A much quieter mind when talking to people so I am a better listener. A less busy city with no police helicopters constantly whirring. Just bird song.

Then there's the Covid news.

We're going to lose our beloved Woman's Weekly, Listener, North and South, NEXT and many more. Staples we have grown up with and love because they report us. The perils of losing NZ ownership starkly revealed. Our PM Jacinda says she is, "Frankly gutted." The business outlook is generally gloomy, harbinger of much economic pain to come.  Air New Zealand slashes its domestic flights by 95 percent as we experience the largest increase in new Covid cases in one day- 89 new cases, bringing out total to 797. As the largest number of tests was completed yesterday, this is not unexpected. Only 1% are being classed as community transmission but 17%are still being contact traced. Our nation's fate hangs in the balance as our social media swings from hard copy to Facebook and other online platforms. Can we swing it back? Will we want to?
