I'm getting to the end of War and Peace. Tolstoy's writing gives a realistic picture of social and political life in Russia during Napoleon's ill-fated invasion of 1812. Writing in the late 1850's, he vindicates the Russian military commander, Field Marshal, Kutuzov, who was criticised heavily for refusing to push Russian troops into battles they didn't need to fight. Tolstoy paints a picture of a military man who rose above infighting, and pressure from the Tsar to win the war by refusing to engage in battle and letting Napoleon fall on his sword through poor strategy and equivocal leadership. Kutuzov in conversation with Prince Andrey, "'But we shall have to fight, shan't we?' said Prince Andrey. 'Oh yes, if that's what people want they'll have to have it...but mark my words, dear boy! There's nothing stronger than those two old soldiers-
time and patience...When in doubt, my friend,"- he (Kutuzov) paused- 'hold back.'" ... Time and patience will get us through now methinks.
There are so many things we miss because our heads are too busy. Today I stop and take stock.

We're allowed out for up to an hour once per day for exercise that takes us no more than 1km from home. Within that distance we have the pleasure port and river, so there's a nice loop to do. To go out, we have to fill in & sign & date & time a form saying why we're out of the house. We can walk with people weŕe confined with. €135 first-offence fine if the cops find you without up-to-date paperwork.
In Paris jogging is banned in daytime as the French death toll reaches 597 for the last 24 hours. In New Zealand the number of new cases is slowly falling- 26 confirmed and 24 probable cases. This is a drop from yesterday's 54 cases. Also down from 67 cases on Monday. This is working.
