Day 13- Pickling Onions, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny

Life has slowed. And so has Covid-19 in New Zealand. The number of cases decreases for the first time with 54 new confirmed and probable cases, bringing the total to 1160. !2 are in hospital and 4 in intensive care. With 65 recovering in the past day, today is the first day recoveries have exceeded new cases. Cause for cautions celebration- the number of cases has decreased for the first time since the lock down began.
Our Health Minister, David Clark, is shamed because, as well as driving to a bike park to ride a trail, he confessed he drove his family 20km for a walk on the beach. He keeps his job, for now. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been transferred to intensive care. I call my cousin, Tony, in England. It's tough over there. Their lock down started a while before ours and Tony's looking tired. After a long winter they're stuck inside contemplating 2921 deaths. So far.
Meanwhile, back at Upper Crichton Terrace, it's inanity, insanity and profanity as pickling onions takes over. Followed by silver beet on pizza. I'm cracking. The beet leaves are bitter, but spread over salsa with a best before date of July 2019, tasty. Gardening puts me back on track. In her press conference, Jacinda lists the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny as essential workers. A funny old day.
