Term One- I'm Still Standing

Over the line. I've had challenge after challenge this year. So far. So I'm stoked to get to Friday, end of Term One. I'm still standing....yeah, yeah, yeah.

On Saturday I pick up Nic from the airport. She's on her farewell South Island gig before she drives back to Tauranga and her old life. Maybe. I'm still swimming and loving cooler water and temperatures which are above average. I used to freeze in late March. Or maybe I'm getting used to it.

I wrap up what I can and what I need to on Monday. School work, curtains. Nick and I hit the road after I tidy up on Tuesday. Sharyn laughs; her mother used to tidy up before going on holiday. I know the road, every turn, every straight stretch, the mountains, the hills. We arrive after dark, unload the car and crash. The air is still and I'm tempted to keep swimming. The water is dark and cool. I'm the only one, bar one, who breaks the ice. I raid Maxine's larder- the granny smith tree and more walnuts. Nic and I keep packing. I try to sell a 1991 opening year Gibbston Valley bottle. Tall elegant, specifically designed for the region, but no longer used. I also try to find out who J Goater is. I bought his photo for the frame at Alexandra Wasterbusters but this unknown man is intriguing. He's dressed in jockey garb with an aquiline nose. I catch up with Denis Kent, the artist behind the Autumn Colours painting- we have a whiskey and gate crash Max's family dinner.
