Breathing Through The Heat

RNZ reports Covid-19 deaths have reached 2 million. The first million was reached in September 2020, the second took only 108 days. A Kiwi intensive care nurse in the UK talks about a 12 hour shift which is a race against time to save lives. About patients who can only plead with their eyes. When I stop to think about Covid, which isn't often, I'm detached. This is happening to someone else, somewhere else. Fortunate for now. But what a tragedy for so many. When I go to the car show at Cromwell, the crowds milling close together scream how lucky we are. I feel guilt, but only for a moment. I find cars of significance- a T bird convertible which Jim Penfield, my AFS host dad owned, a Chevvy Impala which my neighbour Rosey used to drive me to San Pasqual High School in, perched together on the roomy front bench seat. Cruising the streets of Escondido late on a Saturday night, listening to Fleetwood Mac Rumours. Nostalgic. Another trip into my past, visiting an acquaintance with similar life experience. Conversation of a lifetime. A swim to cool off, wondering what just happened.
