Mid Term Break and All's Well

First things first. I have coffee with Pete and Mrs Pete, name of Olga, at Ambrose Heal. Olga is gardening and Pete is clearly chuffed when he introduces her. I bring a Dorny cake, recipe from a ski season at Alta, Utah, above Salt Lake City, 1986. It's a long time ago now but thecooks at The Rustler  made really good food and I loved that cake. It's got a date base and a walnut, chocolate, coconut and brown sugar topping. One piece is enough to keep the average human buzzing for a day. Pete has a sweet tooth and takes a piece for later. We have a chat about finishes for the wood floor. One of my next decisions. Pete makes it easy. He brings out an oil based and a water based product and we put two coats on a sample of Tasmanian Blackwood. I've got into the habit of transporting random house components in my car for unpredictable house moments.

I leave the wood outside in the rain while I'm at school for a marking meeting and surface water droplets highlight the obvious difference between oil and water finishes. And there's more depth of grain on the oil sample. Two hours' of work later I'm relieved most of my students have managed to pull off a pass. We can move to the next assessment...life in senior school.

On the way home I stop at the PPTA field office to pick up boxes from Jo but she's forgotten to bring them in. So I have a coffee. Back at Pete's I confirm cupboard handle choice then it's home to make food, food and more food...Chris brings two of his mates back from the pub so there's enough people to eat it all. Winter + wet weather = eating. On the Covid front, the lock down is slowing the spread of the virus in Auckland.
