Just as I'm beginning to think that the pandemic has brought a degree of world peace, based on fewer news reports of bombings, I spot the following item.
El Salvador's President has authorised the use of "lethal force" by police and military against gang members to crack down on heightened violence amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The Central American country reported 24 homicides on Saturday, the worst one-day toll since Nayib Bukele took office in June, prompting him to order a 24-hour lockdown in prisons housing gang members.
By late afternoon on Sunday, police had registered another 29 murders, prompting him to introduce tougher measures against gangs taking advantage of the fact security forces have been helping contain the virus outbreak.
Local news- a tui has been spotted in Mount Pleasant. I hadn't realised tui had vacated the Garden City. Any time I see one I think of the Tui in my life, my mum. They've become an iconic bird for Aotearoa with their iridescent plumage and white bib under the throat.
News of a different calibre, the Rolling Stones released a new song, Living in a Ghost Town, on Thursday. I'm not a died in the wool Stones fan but I like this one.
